Every Good Bar in the world would have a Bottle? Or should have a bottle?
If a Poll could be done of all Non Whisky Drinkers, What's a Good Single Malt?
Glenfiddich is likely to be the answer.
Not Glenfiddich 12 or 15 or 18 Years Old.
Glenfiddich that comes in a Green Tube that's a good Single Malt would be the Answer.
Yes i said Non Whisky Drinkers because they will observe the marketing and absorb it the most.
Especially when every time they are at a Good Bar, Liquor Retail Store or Travelling through Duty free Glenfiddich 12 is likely to be positioned prominently.
The most Recognizable Single Malt Brand in the world.
Both happiness and sadness many bottles of Glenfiddich 12 have been drunk in my presence. Luckily mostly in happiness and celebration.
During my March 2018 Trip of Scotland I was very excited to finally visit what I believed to be Spiritual Home of Single Malt Scotch. I did their 4 Hour Pioneers Tour which was just amazing.
Glenfiddich 12 Years Old
Glenfiddich 12 is one of the most Well Balanced non Peated Single Malt money could buy.
Aged in a combination of American and European Oak Cask.
It's Crisp, light, fruity and Floral character is a great Benchmark and probably the best Single Malt to start your journey on.
Many I have met over the years never dabbled into anything except Glenfiddich 12 as it is a complete Whisky. But also they could go anywhere in the world and pick up a bottle to enjoy. That's the power of Glenfiddich brand and it's immense distribution.
It's sweetness is alluring and finish lingers with reminders of 12yo in Oak Barrels.
I enjoy it but the finish is short to medium at best. I just wish it could be released occasionally in a 46% Non Chill Filtered version.
My Top Tip: Pour yourself a Generous Dram of 12 with Some sliced Green Apples or Pears. Eat the fruit first then sip your Glenfiddich 12. The sweetness of eating fruit first will help exemplify the rich sweetness of Glenfiddich 12.
Glenfiddich 15 Year Old
Sherry Cask ageing is evident with the Glenfiddich 15 looking at the beautiful color of it.
It does not jump at you but the nose is sweet and lures you in with some oak too.
Aged in 3 different cask types: American Oak, Portuguese Sherry Casks & Virgin Oak.
All of this is then married together in huge Solera Vat. Which apparently is always kept at least half full. Leaving some very old Whisky in the Vat at all times.
Having checked out the Solera Vat inside Warehouse No.1 it is quite a clever way to keep some of older whisky always in the mix.
I asked my Tour Guide what would happen if I dove into the Huge Wooden Vat. He politely replied I would drown, may be happily.
On first sip it's sweetness rewards you with characters of Raisins and then a gentle spice.
I get a little bit of honey too which lingers beautifully.
My Top Tip: Pour yourself a generous dram of Glenfiddich 15 with a small spoonful of Honey. Eat the honey first and then sip your Glenfiddich 15. Honey sweetness will coat your mouth really increasing the richness of 15 year old dram, with lingering spices. A great experience.
Glenfiddich 18 Years Old
18 years is a very long time in whatever context you look at it.
At time of writing this blog in 2020 Glenfiddich 18 we are drinking now was put down in Barrels well before first Apple Smartphone was launched.
How far has the Iphone come along since its tiny small first Model.
But the Glenfiddich Barrels stayed put silently ageing, while the whole world was unravelling.
Matured in both Spanish Oloroso wood and American Oak.
Once the especially chosen 18 year aged barrels have been married together, whisky is moved into Huge individual Tuns.
So each batch from individual tun has its own slightly unique character.
Each batch is individually numbered and no more than 150 batches are aged together.
In warehouse No.1 at Glenfiddich i saw some of these massive Tuns resting blissfully.
Glenfiddich 18 is one of the earliest really premium whisky bottles i remember drinking beyond the realms of usual 12yo. In fact i did not try 15yo till recently for the first time.
Glenfiddich 18 has outstanding nutty character i really enjoy which is very hard to find in any other whiskies.
My Top Tip: Pour yourself a generous amount of Glenfiddich 18 with some dried almonds. Eat the almonds then slowly sip on the outstanding Glenfiddich 18.
Overall Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18 year old Bottlings
both delight and charm. They are approachable with nothing in their to offend you like peat smoke or too much spice of a sherry cask. Quite a well balanced smooth ride overall.
For me personally it can taste a little flat on occasion that’s why i suggest the food cues to lift your Glenfiddich drinking experience to another level.
Which one do i prefer? Glenfiddich 18 Year Old without a doubt.
